Behaviour Guidelines

The City of Brampton is committed to providing a safe and harassment-free environment. Coarse language, aggressive, disrespectful, or uncooperative behaviour is not acceptable. If inappropriate behaviour occurs, it may be documented, reported, and may result in removal from the program and/or facility.

Participant Conduct

Please inform us of any behavioural concerns that could affect the safety or well-being of participants, staff or others in the program. Staff will make every effort to accommodate participant needs; however, we reserve the right to withdraw participants from recreation programs should their behaviour cause harm to themselves, other participants, staff or property.

Our Approach to Behaviour Support

We are committed to creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all participants. To ensure fairness and consistency, we use a structured behaviour support system that groups behaviours into levels. Each incident is reviewed individually. If more than one type of behaviour occurs during an incident, the behaviour with the highest risk level will guide our response. When more than one participant is involved in an incident, each individual is assessed separately based on their actions so that every situation is handled fairly and appropriately.

We also consider the intent behind the behaviour and which strategies are most effective in supporting positive outcomes. Our goal is to work with participants and families to support positive behaviour and ensure a safe, welcoming experience for all.

Behaviour Levels and Point System

To help maintain a safe, respectful, and positive environment for everyone, behaviours are grouped into the following levels. These levels guide how staff respond and what supports may be put in place.

Green
Positive, respectful behaviour that supports a safe and fun environment.
Participants, their parents/guardians and staff are encouraged to always demonstrate green level behaviours.
Yellow | 1 Point
Disruptive behaviour without injury or harm to themselves, others, or property. This may briefly affect participation but can typically be addressed through simple reminders, redirection, or small adjustments to the activity.
Orange | 2 Points
Behaviour that impacts safety, property, or the experience of others. This may affect a participant’s ability to take part and may require additional support, targeted strategies, program adjustments, or a short break from the activity.
Red | 5 Points
Serious behaviour that causes harm to oneself, others, or property, or requires an emergency response. This level significantly affects safety and program participation and may require major adjustments, added supports and may result in suspension from programs.
Behaviour Documentation and Follow Up
Follow-up on behaviour incidents will include:
- Staff will document the behaviour
- A staff member will contact the parent/guardian the same day or immediately, depending on the severity of the behaviour
- If safety is a concern, parent/guardian will be required to pick up participant immediately
- If safety is a concern, the parent/guardian will be required to pick up the participant immediately, or within 90 minutes of being notified, in accordance with our Behaviour Standard Operating Procedure.
