All First Aid providers in Ontario have been required to update their programs to meet the new requirements, including the Lifesaving Society, the organization through which the City of Brampton First Aid courses are delivered. The First Aid program is periodically updated to ensure that it is current with Canadian first aid standards. What is part of the First Aid program update?Customers will notice changes in program titles and some content of the courses. The content changes include adding new emerging topics to the program to further enhance learning and application in emergency situations. These content changes are minor, and the overall learning outcomes remain the same. Why are the First Aid programs changing names?WSIB is launching its modernized First Aid program on June 22, 2026, and as a part of these changes, the program names have changed. Please see the chart below for the new names:Name Prior to June 22, 2026Name After June 22, 2026Emergency First Aid with CPR-BBasic First Aid with CPR-C and AEDStandard First Aid with CPR-CIntermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AEDCPR-CCPR-C and AEDWhat will happen to first aid certification issued prior to June 22, 2026?First aid certifications such as Standard First Aid with CPR-C and Emergency First Aid with CPR-B will remain current for 36 months after the issue date, if issued on June 21, 2026, or earlier. My original/full (2-day) Standard First Aid certification is expiring soon, and I need to attend a 1-day recertification course. How does this update affect this? If you last took an original/full (2-day) Standard First Aid course with a WSIB-approved agency, you are able to take a 1-day Intermediate First Aid course as long as it is taken within 36 months of your original course. A photocopy of your certification will need to be provided to the course conductor if your original course was with a different organization other than Lifesaving Society. How does the First Aid update affect Bronze Award programs in the City of Brampton? There are only minor changes to the Bronze Award programs with the City of Brampton. The City of Brampton are continuing to offer courses as combo courses, pairing Bronze Medallion with Basic First Aid and CPR-C and AED, and Bronze Cross with Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED. Customers will notice a slight increase in the number of hours of the courses as Bronze Medallion and Basic First Aid with CPR-C and AED is increasing from 23 hours to 24 hours (plus any required break time), and Bronze Cross and Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED is increasing from 33 hours to 35 hours (plus any required break time). What is the exam fee, and why is it a required extra fee on Aquatic Leadership and First Aid courses? The Lifesaving Society charges the City of Brampton an exam fee for every candidate registered in one of its programs. The exam fee is required to issue certifications to candidates, and the Lifesaving Society charges it even if the candidate passes or fails the certification. In an effort to remain transparent about our program fees, the City of Brampton has moved the exam fees to an extra required fee for all of our Aquatic Leadership courses. I want more information about the update to the First Aid program. Where can I find it? You can read more about the updates on the Lifesaving Society’s website or on the WSIB website. I have a copy of the Canadian First Aid Manual from my last first aid course. Can I still use this for the new course? The Canadian First Aid Manual has been updated, and after June 22, 2026, candidates will need to have a copy of the new Canadian First Aid Manual. All candidates must have a manual to participate in the course. Updated manuals will be available for purchase upon registration. How do these changes affect prerequisites for other Lifesaving Society courses? If a course required Standard First Aid with CPR-C prior to June 22, 2026, then the prerequisites will update to be able to accept either Standard First Aid with CPR-C OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED. If a course required Emergency First Aid with CPR-B prior to June 22, 2026, the prerequisites will be updated to accept either Emergency First Aid with CPR-B OR Basic First Aid with CPR-C and AED. For the most accurate information on required prerequisites, please refer to the program’s description when registering and the Lifesaving Society’s website.
