Integrated Pest Management

Our Approach to Pest Management

To maintain healthy green spaces for all residents, the City uses pest management practices to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases, especially in high-use areas like playgrounds, trails, and gardens. This helps keep our parks safe, clean, and enjoyable, while reducing the impact on people and the environment.

What Methods Do We Use?

We follow Ontario's Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Act, 2008, which prohibits the use of conventional pesticides for cosmetic purposes.

Our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach combines multiple strategies to manage pests effectively and minimize risks to human health and the environment.

Steam Weeders

Use heat from steam or hot water to destroy weeds by disrupting their cellular structure, a chemical-free and organic alternative.

Mechanical Methods

Hand removal and other tools help prevent and control pest presems.

Chemical Use

Pesticides are used on only as a last resort in limited, targeted situations.

What You'll See in the Park

  • Workers using steam or hot water equipment to treat weeds.
  • Temporary signage in areas where pest control is in progress.
  • Natural vegetation control methods in use, especially near water sources or sensitive areas.
