Planning and Projects

Brampton residents rely on transportation infrastructure on a daily basis, but the development and maintenance of these assets are often taken for granted. Capital projects range from road widenings, new roads and sidewalks, improvements to railway crossings and bridge rehabilitation.

The process to plan and implement a capital project generally requires 4 to 9 years to complete, as follows:

Policy identifies future needs: The Transportation Master Plan (TMP) identifies road capacity improvement projects to accommodate the City’s growth. These infrastructure projects are used to develop the 10-Year Roads Capital Program. City Council approves the budget for the first year of the 10-Year Capital Program. The remaining 9 years are presented as a forecast.
The yearly budget process includes the review of each project. Project timing may be reprioritized depending on property acquisition, utility relocation, external approvals, development within the City and available funding.
Environmental Assessments study the options: The Capital Works division evaluates infrastructure projects for their overall environmental impact, and public information centres are held to solicit feedback from affected stakeholders. There are various Environmental Assessment studies currently in progress.

Typically, the Class EA process takes 1 to 3 years to complete.
Detailed Designs are prepared: Technical standards and requirements are incorporated into a detailed construction plan, with input from local municipalities, government agencies, conservation authorities, and utility companies. During this phase, the City may also acquire additional property and relocate utilities to facilitate the upcoming road improvements.

This phase of the project, which includes the detailed design, property acquisition, utility relocation and approvals may take three years or more to complete.
Construction plans are finalized: Once detailed designs are complete, construction tenders are advertised on the City of Brampton's site. A tender is a legal document that is used as an invitation for contractors to submit a quotation to perform work for the City. The tenders are typically publicly advertised for two to four weeks, depending on the complexity of the project.
Infrastructure is built and maintained: Residents and businesses impacted by construction activities will receive a Notice of Construction letter. Future and current construction projects are mapped and tracked online.

Construction usually begins a month after the contract tender has been awarded and can take up to two years to complete.

Completed construction projects are inspected and maintained on a regular basis to keep the road network in a state of good repair.
