​The Heart Lake Road Wetlands Connectivity Project is an ecological restoration and stormwater infrastructure improvement project led by the City of Brampton in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). The project area is within the Heart Lake Wetlands Complex, one of Brampton’s most ecologically significant wetland networks that drains into Spring Creek.

An existing culvert beneath Heart Lake Road is no longer functioning properly and is disrupting natural water flow between the east and west wetlands. This has contributed to localized flooding, degraded habitat connectivity, and reduced ecological function. Restoring this connection is a key priority to maintain wetland hydrology, support wildlife movement, and improve climate resilience in the area.

Project Overview

​The project includes a series of coordinated restoration and infrastructure improvements along Heart Lake Road between Sandalwood Parkway and Countryside Drive, across approximately 10 hectares of wetland area. Together, these activities are designed to improve wetland connectivity, enhance biodiversity and reduce flooding along the roadway and upstream.

Project Activities

• Removal of invasive plant species, and replanting with native vegetation to restore the natural plant community and improve habitat quality.
• Shoreline restoration to stabilize banks, reduce erosion, and create healthier conditions for fish, amphibians, and wetland-dependent wildlife.
• Replacement of an aged culv​ert under Heart Lake Road to improve water flow between the wetlands on either side of the road and function as a new wildlife crossing.
• Installation of new wildlife fencing to direct turtles and other wildlife toward the culvert crossing, keeping them off the road and reducing the risk of mortality.
