Purpose
The City is initiating a watercourse restoration project in the neighbourhood of Evergreen Estates, Meadowview Subdivision, and Buldo Estates. The restoration project will remove sediment that has accumulated in the watercourse since its original construction in the early 1980s.
Background
The watercourses in the project area are part of the Salt Creek tributary within the West Humber Watershed. The watercourses begin from Goreway Drive and flow through the residential neighbourhoods to McVean Drive. The watercourses were built in stages between 1983 and 1993 to manage stormwater runoff from over 184 residential properties.
Project Overview
The City completed an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) in 2023 to assess the ecological system in the project area and provide guidance on mitigating ecological impacts during the future restoration project. Consulting staff conducted daytime wildlife and vegetation assessments and three nighttime surveys, from 30 minutes past sunset to midnight, to document the presence or absence of breeding amphibians. All field work was conducted within the City’s easements along the watercourse.
The restoration project will remove accumulated sediment and restore the watercourse with new vegetation, following the recommendations of the EIS and the criteria set by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), which regulates the project area. The City is seeking approval for this work from TRCA through a Routine Infrastructure Work permit before beginning the restoration.
