Project Overview
As part of the Cottrelle Boulevard extension project from Goreway Drive to Humberwest Parkway, the City has successfully completed the retrofit of the Burrells Hollow Pond and Upper Ridge Pond in 2024. These improvements were designed to reduce thermal pollution from warm stormwater runoff, helping to protect the Redside Dace, which is an endangered fish protected under the Endangered Species Act. By deepening the ponds, colder water will be released into the receiving watercourse to protect the habitat of temperature-sensitive species such as the Redside Dace.
Pond Information
Both Burrells Hollow and Upper Ridge Pond drain to the Humber River and play a crucial role in managing stormwater runoff.
Burrells Hollow pond (built in 2006) collects runoff from a 19-hectare area, servicing over 225 homes and businesses. As part of the retrofit, 2,550 cubic metres of sediment was removed - equivalent to filling over 1,400 pickup truck beds.
Upper Ridge Pond (built in 2005) collects runoff from a 52-hectare area, servicing over 442 homes and businesses. The retrofit included the removal of 500 cubic metres of sediment - equivalent to filling approximately 280 pickup truck beds.
Project Timeline
Construction was complete in 2024.
