Celebrating National Public Works Week | May 17 - May 23, 2026
National Public Works Week (NPWW) celebrates the essential services public works staff provide to keep cities running safely, sustainably and efficiently.
This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, acknowledges the roots of service that run deep in public works. Some work – like building roads and bridges – is highly visible, while other public work constructions – like maintaining water and sewer systems – are sometimes hidden form view.
Together, these efforts form the foundation of thriving communities, reminding us that every project, seen or unseen, powers the connection between services and the people it supports.
Services include:
- Managing 50,000 streetlights and more than 600 signalized intersections.
- Maintaining over 4,100 lane-kilometres of roads and approximately 2,000 kilometres of sidewalks.
- Supporting stormwater infrastructure to protect homes and natural areas from flooding.
- Delivering road resurfacing, pothole repair, signage and pavement marking services.
- Providing seasonal services such as snow clearing, street sweeping and leaf collection.
- Leading road safety initiatives and supporting emergency response.
- Overseeing building construction, engineering and facility operations.
