We want Brampton to feel like a place of belonging, pride and opportunity. Civic engagement is how we protect, shape and strengthen that vision together.
The Black Empowerment Unit leads civic engagement initiatives that empower the Black community to take an active role in public life. We collaborate with local leaders, residents and organizations to build the knowledge, skills, motivation and access needed to make meaningful change.
What Is Civic Engagement?
Civic engagement means more than voting, it’s about participating in the decisions and actions that shape our neighborhoods, from political involvement to community-building.
We support both political and non-political efforts to improve quality of life for Black residents through:
- Advocacy and political activism
- Environmental justice initiatives
- Volunteering and mutual aid
- Newcomer settlement and integration support
- Social cohesion and intergenerational dialogue
- Service-learning and youth civic education
- Affordable housing advocacy
- Emergency planning and disaster response mobilization
When Black residents are equipped and empowered to lead, we build a stronger, safer and more equitable Brampton for all.
Program Examples:
- Political activism, environmentalism, community and national service.
- Volunteering, settlement for new black residence, social cohesion and service-learning.
- Partnering with the Region of Peel to create access to affordable home to keep residents safe.
