Assistive Listening Devices - Hearing Loops

Survey

The City of Brampton recently installed hearing loops at some of its service counters at various facilities. If you used a hearing loop at one of the City’s facilities, we’d like to hear from you and learn about your experience.

A hearing loop is a wireless technology that sends an electromagnetic signal directly to an individual’s hearing aid. Speech is picked up by the microphone and converted into a magnetic signal by the amplifier and transmitted toward the user through an aerial built into the loop signage. Since the sound is being sent directly from a microphone into a hearing aid or cochlear implant, background noise is reduced and the sound is customized for each individual user’s hearing loss.

As of 2022, 5.6% of Canadians reported having a hearing disability. That’s more than 1.6 million people! 81% of persons with a hearing disability experience barriers to accessibility.

In noisy environments, hearing loops help reduce the ambient noise and amplify the sound source, so individuals who use hearing aids or have cochlear implants can hear sound louder and clearer, making speech and music understandable and intelligible.

When you see the blue hearing loop sign, please turn on the T-Coil in your hearing aid/cochlear implant. If you’re unsure whether your hearing device has T-Coil capability, please speak with your audiologist.

  Hearing Loop Indentifier

A telecoil (or T-coil) is a small copper wire located inside a hearing aid, providing hearing aid compatibility with assistive listening devices, like hearing loops. T-coils receive the magnetic sound signal inside the loop
