Trees in New Residential Neighbourhoods

In new residential subdivisions, street trees are planted by either the developer or the builder according to City-approved subdivision plans. Considerable effort goes into creating subdivision plans that offer the best placement and mixture of trees. Street trees are usually planted in new subdivisions shortly after the lots are sodded. Trees are usually not planted during the hot and dry months of July and August.

The condition of each street tree remains the responsibility of the developer or builder until the warranty has expired. A 2-year warranty is placed on a street tree from time of planting and must go through 2 winters to ensure survivability. If a tree dies before the 2-year warranty has expired, it will be replaced by the developer or builder. After the warranty has expired, the city will assume responsibility the street tree.

Permit Required for Private Tree Removal

A permit is required if:

  • The tree is more than 2 metres from an occupied building, and
  • The diameter is 30 centimetres or more at 1.37 metres height.

The City does not remove trees on private property. Property owners are responsible for maintaining and removing their own trees. Anyone wishing to injure or remove a tree on private property must comply with the Tree Preservation By-law and/or the Woodlot Conservation By-law.
