International Women's Day

Every year on March 8, the City of Brampton celebrates International Women's Day (IWD), recognizing the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women globally. Since 1911, IWD has served as a day to renew our commitment to pushing for gender equality, justice and empowerment of all women in Canada and around the world. Each year, a theme is selected to guide initiatives around the world, reflecting emerging trends and the ongoing work toward gender parity.

Gender-Based Violence & Intimate Partner Violence

Gender-based violence is defined as violence or abuse perpetrated against a woman, girl or gender-diverse individual because of their gender, gender expression, gender identity or perceived gender. According to official 2023 United Nations Women statistics, globally, an estimated 1 in 3 women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their lifetime. The Annual Femicide List published by the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses reported that the number of femicides from 2019 to 2022 increased by approximately 30%, showing the growing need for supportive services and transitional housing in Brampton and Peel Region.

In June 2023, the City declared gender-based violence and intimate partner violence an epidemic in Brampton alongside 24 other municipalities and regions. The City of Brampton, Peel Region, Peel Regional Police and community organizations continue to collaborate on initiatives such as the "It's not ok" and "Break the Silence" education campaigns to increase public awareness around the issue of domestic violence. Brampton continues to support the work and advocacy of Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse, the Safe Centre of Peel, Embrave: Agency to End Violence, and Victim Services of Peel to help put an end to gender-based violence and intimate partner violence.
