Pets and Emergencies

Emergencies can happen at any time with little are no warning and so it’s important for residents to prepare today to keep themselves and their pets safe.

Residents are encouraged to prepare a portable pet emergency kit in the event that you must evacuate. Be sure to have:

  • Medical records
  • Recent photo
  • Contact info for kennels
  • Contact info for pet-friendly hotels and relatives
  • Contact info for personal veterinarian
  • Leash
  • Food
  • Water
  • Bowls
  • Muzzle (if required)
  • Carriers for small pets
  • Keep this kit in the same spot as your family emergency kit for easy retrieval.

Pets and Evacuation

During an emergency situation, residents with pets and/or service animals will be accepted at one of our designated pet-friendly evacuation centres in Brampton. Resident will have the option to self-evacuate, make alternate arrangement for their pets or transport them to the designated evacuation centre. Pet owners will remain the primary caregivers for their pets during their time in the evacuation centre.

You may not be home when an evacuation order is given and so it’s important to plan in advance with a trusted neighbour to evacuate your pet. Arrangements should include meeting at a pre-arranged location.

Animals should not be left off-leash during emergencies or approaching emergencies, as they may not behave in a predictable fashion.

If pets must be left behind, a supply of food and water for several days should be left with them. Placards could be placed on an outside door indicating that a pet is inside.

Make plans in advance for livestock. Keep a 3+ day supply of water, feed, hay, and medication in a centralized location.

The City of Brampton Evacuation Plan indicates that the City of Brampton Animal Services will provide overall coordination with pet owners, other city departments, regional agencies and other stakeholders such as local veterinarians, the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals and the Humane Society in an evacuation emergency.
