Brampton Council approves exciting work plan and engagement strategy for City’s new Official Plan

BRAMPTON, ON (January 23, 2020) – On January 22, 2020 at a Special Meeting of Council, Brampton City Council approved a new work plan and extensive community engagement strategy to assist in building the Brampton 2040 Plan – the City’s new Official Plan.

Following extensive public engagement in the Fall of 2017, the Brampton 2040 Vision was endorsed by Council in May 2018. This Vision depicts a more sustainable, urban and vibrant future for the City. The Term of Council Priorities outline key steps to move Brampton towards this future. The Brampton 2040 Plan is a critical part of this process, and this new Official Plan will provide direction to ensure all City planning, projects and development are working together to achieve the aspirations of the Brampton 2040 Vision.

To assist City staff in the creation of the Brampton 2040 Plan, the City has retained WSP Canada Group Ltd to lend multidisciplinary expertise in the areas of Land Use Planning, Policy Planning and Urban Design; Community and Stakeholder Engagement; Sustainability; Transportation; Environmental Planning; Parks and Open Space Planning; and Arts, Culture Planning and Heritage Preservation.

The work plan approved today has five phases that extend over two years to 2022, with multiple opportunities for residents to engage with the City and shape the future of Brampton’s growth.

Key Community Engagement Milestones

Phase 1: Brampton 2040 Speaker Series – intended to build greater awareness of city planning in the community with particular attention towards translating high level aspirational vision into successful implementation plans.

Phase 2: Testing the 2040 Vision and Identifying Data Gaps – an engagement program will seek input to test the Brampton 2040 Vision and identify any data gaps that may exist.

Phase 3: Community Structure Workshops – engagement during this Phase will seek input as the City builds upon, tests and confirms the community structure outlined in the Brampton 2040 Vision.

Phase 4: Discussion Papers and Draft Policy Directions – the engagement program will seek input on the core topic areas (seven core Vision Statement Areas of the Brampton 2040 Vision) that will inform the direction of the Brampton 2040 Plan as articulated through discussion papers and a policy directions report.

Phase 5: Final OP Policies – during this Phase, the City will seek input on the draft policies contained within the Draft Brampton 2040 Plan.

The work plan and community engagement opportunities outlined in the strategy are designed to deliver a forward-looking Official Plan that reflects the vision established through the successful Brampton 2040 Vision process.
