City of Brampton reaffirms local commitment to a resilient and inclusive global future at Urban 20 Conference

BRAMPTON, ON (July 14, 2023) – Joining municipal leaders from around the world, the City of Brampton participated in the 2023 Urban 20 (U20) conference to discuss the significant role cities play in tackling global and local challenges such as pandemics, climate change impacts, bio-diversity loss, socio-economic inequalities, and geo-political issues.

In its sixth cycle of U20, under the leadership of the 2023 U20 Chair city of Ahmedabad, discussion and efforts focused on drafting a roadmap for global change that will be driven by cities by closing the gaps between policy and practice at all levels of governance.

Through daily city building activities delivering municipal services and initiatives such as transit, job creation and housing development, municipalities are at the frontlines and play a pivotal role in effective solutions to pressing global issues.

Brampton strives to be at the centre of sustainability efforts and the global movement toward reducing our impact on the planet. Locally, the City of Brampton has focused its sustainability efforts through its Grow Green Environmental Master Plan (EMP). The EMP is a comprehensive framework to improve Brampton’s environmental performance, including principles, goals, actions, metrics, and targets.  The City’s EMP vision is of a community that will conserve, enhance and balance our natural and built environments to create a healthy, sustainable, and resilient city.

About the Urban 20

Urban 20 or U20 is a city diplomacy initiative, comprising of cities from G20 countries. It strives to establish a lasting practice of engagement among cities to develop a collective message that emphasizes the role of cities in taking forward the sustainable development agenda. U20 is an engagement group under the larger intergovernmental forum of G20 and plays a vital role in contributing perspectives, concerns, and ideas from cities to inform and enrich the overall G20 negotiations.

The U20 brings together mayors from G20 cities under a common framework and coordinates a joint position to inform the discussions of national leaders. Contributions from the U20 are shared with the G20 Presidency and Heads of State, enhancing the role of cities as global economic and political leaders.

Ahmedabad, one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities of India, will be the Chair for the 6th edition of U20. Resonating with India’s G20 theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, U20 Ahmedabad will emphasize that actions at the city level can drive lasting positive global outcomes underscoring the interconnectedness of the world and our shared future.
