Some places quietly become part of our everyday lives before we truly notice them. That was my experience with downtown Brampton.

This project grew from months of walking, sketching, and observing the city through changing seasons. One of the featured paintings the view on the Main Street was created live during BAO’s Open Studio, surrounded by conversations with visitors who shared their own memories of these streets. The other painting of Rose Theatre emerged during the quiet days of the winter holidays, when downtown felt peaceful and the glow from theatre lights reflected across the snow. Although painted at different moments, both works capture the same feeling: the warmth and sense of connection that these places continue to offer throughout the year.

Where the Lights Gather brings together familiar streets, historic storefronts, and The Rose Theatre into one continuous composition that wraps around the traffic box. Rather than presenting a literal map of downtown, the artwork weaves together recognizable landmarks into an imagined evening walk through Brampton.

The uninterrupted night sky flows across all four sides of the box, visually connecting each scene. Warm golden lights contrast with cool blues and violets, transforming ordinary architecture into a place of atmosphere, memory, and discovery. As people move around the box, new perspectives gradually unfold, encouraging them to notice familiar places in a different way.

By transforming everyday infrastructure into public art, the project celebrates Brampton’s cultural identity and the shared spaces where stories begin, creativity grows, and people come together. It is an invitation to slow down, look again, and rediscover the beauty that often hides in the places we pass every day.

Tetiana Zavadska is a Ukrainian-born visual artist based in Brampton, Ontario. Holding a Master of Architecture, her practice is shaped by a deep understanding of urban space, architecture, and the emotional relationships people build with the places they inhabit.

Working primarily with watercolour, coloured inks, and mixed media, Zavadska creates expressive interpretations of streetscapes, storefronts, and neighbourhood landmarks. Through vibrant colour, layered compositions, and dynamic linework, she transforms familiar urban environments into visual narratives that celebrate everyday architecture and invite viewers to see their surroundings with renewed curiosity.

Since relocating to Canada, Zavadska has focused on documenting and reimagining Brampton’s evolving identity through art. Her work reflects the city’s multicultural character and explores themes of place, belonging, and community, highlighting the shared public spaces that connect people across diverse backgrounds.

In 2026, Zavadska was selected as an Artist in Residence at the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) and participated in the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, one of Canada’s leading outdoor art events. Her architectural and artistic practice continues to bridge design, storytelling, and public engagement, with a particular interest in creating artwork that fosters pride, connection, and a stronger sense of place.
