Earth Hour

​​Earth Hour is a global initiative, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), that brings the world together and shines a spotlight on the environmental issues affecting our planet such as climate change and nature loss.

The campaign encourages everyone to take action by turning off their lights and non-essential devices and giving an hour for earth. This Earth Hour, spend 60 minutes doing something positive for our planet.

Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

The City of Brampton will participate in Earth Hour by turning off non-essential lighting at select City facilities on March 28, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

By participating in Earth Hour last year, the City of Brampton contributed to:

  • 7,626.40 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity saved - that's enough to power an average home for about 8 months.
  • 63,155.93 kilograms of CO2 emissions prevented - that's equivalent to taking a​bout 14 vehicles off the road for a year.

Ways to Spend Earth Hour

Not sure what to do in those 60 minutes? Here are some ideas that you can do during Earth Hour:

  • Take a night walk and experience your neighbourhood in a darker, quieter setting.
  • Stargazing
  • Connect with your family or friends by sharing stories and memories by candlelight.
  • Play a boardgame
  • Read by flashlight
  • Meditate
  • Plan an action list - pick five small actions you can implement in your daily life to help the planet.
  • Learn more about the issues affecting our planet.
  • Discover many more things to do.

Energy Saving Tips

  • Adjust your thermostat by 1 to 2 degrees lower in the winter and 1 to 2 degrees higher in the summer (if your home has AC) to reduce heating and cooling energy use.
  • Close blinds or curtains on warm days to keep heat out and open them on cold days to let in natural warmth.
  • Keep vents and radiators clean and unobstructed to maintain optimal airflow and performance.
  • Unplug electronics when they're not in use to avoid unnecessary standby power consumption.
  • Turn off lights in rooms you're not using to save electricity.
  • Enable energy-saving mode on smart devices such as TVs to reduce overall energy use.

A simple and effective way to reduce your energy use is to understand how much energy your household c​onsumes and what factors influence it. Reviewing your utility bills regularly helps you spot patterns in your energy habits and see which energy-saving actions are making a difference.
