BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton is preparing to assume responsibility for waste collection services beginning October 1, 2027, as part of the transfer of waste collection currently delivered by the Region
of Peel.
Brampton City Council was presented with an implementation plan developed in partnership with the Region of Peel, the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon that outlines key components to support a seamless transition of waste collection services. The plan includes the operational model for lower-tier municipalities, staff transition planning and financial planning, helping support a coordinated transition that maintains reliable service delivery for residents while balancing strong governance and long term value.
The City of Brampton will provide garbage, organics and yard waste collection services in Brampton and Town of Caledon on the Town’s behalf. Recycling collection will continue to be managed by Circular Materials, with no changes to recycling services for residents. Peel Region’s existing waste collection contract will remain in place until September 30, 2027.
Returning waste collection to the municipal level, a responsibility managed locally prior to regionalization in the 1990s, is expected to improve service efficiency, streamline decision-making and provide municipalities with greater flexibility to deliver responsive services that reflect local priorities and growth.
The City of Brampton will continue working closely with the Region of Peel, the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon through the implementation plan for a smooth and seamless transition for residents while minimizing potential service disruptions.
Until October 1, 2027, residents should continue to follow the Region of Peel’s and Circular Materials’ waste and recycling collection schedules and program guidelines. Peel Region’s Community Recycling Centres will remain available for resident use and will continue to be owned and operated by Peel Region beyond the transition.
Residents will receive advance notice of any future service updates, including changes to collection schedules, waste guidelines or program details.
