BRAMPTON, ON – As daytime temperatures begin to rise, melting snow and river ice combined with forecasted rainfall may increase localized flooding risk. Ice jams can also form and block water flow, causing sudden and unpredictable rises in water levels near rivers, streams and low-lying areas.

City flood operations

City teams continue monitoring conditions across Brampton and respond as needed. Crews clear and inspect catch basins, outfalls and inlets while monitoring water levels and conditions in parks and along recreational trails near waterways to help keep residents and park users safe.

As snow melts, water may collect near curbs and at the end of driveways. In some cases, water may remain for up to 72 hours after rainfall ends. If water remains longer, residents should notify the City.

What residents can do now

Residents can take simple steps to reduce water buildup around homes and businesses:
  • Clear snow and debris from storm drains, downspouts and gutters, if safe.
  • Move valuables and important documents to higher levels and review insurance coverage for flood-related damage.
  • Check sump pumps and backwater valves are working properly if installed.
  • Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit with essentials including food, water, medications and key contacts.
  • Monitor local weather forecasts, flood advisories and emergency alerts.
  • Clear nearby catch basins where visible and safe. Small actions help water move away from properties more easily.

Safety reminders during localized flooding

Flood conditions can change quickly. Residents should:
  • Avoid parks and trails near stormwater ponds, rivers and streams during heavy rain or spring thaw.
  • Do not drive or walk through floodwater. Moving water can be dangerous and roads may be weakened beneath the surface.
  • Stay away from standing water and downed power lines. Water may carry electrical current.
  • Leave your home immediately if there are signs of structural damage.
Floodwater may contain sewage, chemicals and debris including broken glass. Avoid contact and do not enter without proper protective equipment.
