BRAMPTON, ON — The City of Brampton is continuing its review of the lodging house framework to establish stronger standards that ensure these homes are permitted in areas where they can be operated safely and responsibly, while balancing community standards with the need for affordable housing.

What is a lodging house?

A lodging house is a home where five or more people rent accommodations separately. These accommodations consist of private or shared bedrooms, while common areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces, are shared among all tenants. This is different from other shared rental arrangements where tenants rent and use the entire home together as a single household.

Have your say: shape the future lodging house framework by completing a survey

From September 22 to October 3, 2025, residents and stakeholders can complete a survey to share their views on how the City should balance housing diversity with safety and neighbourhood quality, including how to:

  • Preserve affordable housing choices for residents
  • Improve safety, accountability and oversight
  • Reduce neighbourhood impacts
  • Make enforcement easier and more effective
