BRAMPTON, ON — To improve safety around construction sites and excavation activities, the City of Brampton has updated its Site Alteration By-law. These updates reinforce existing provincial rules about underground utility locates, which are managed by Ontario One Call and the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act, 2012.
What this means for residents and contractors
Anyone performing excavation, grading or soil-moving activities, including residential construction or landscaping projects, is legally required in Ontario to obtain utility locates before beginning any work. Requesting locates is free and straightforward.
The updated by-law now requires you to keep proof of your utility locate documents on-site during any site alteration activities. This helps the City confirm compliance with provincial laws.
These changes help:
- Keep the community safe by reducing the risk of damaging underground utilities.
- Make sure everyone follows provincial laws.
- Make construction sites safer and more responsible.
Violations can result in fines or being reported to Ontario One Call for additional enforcement.
What other actions has the City taken?
To boost public awareness and compliance, the City has also:
- Improved coordination and training between agencies.
- Included clear rules in Site Alteration permits about needing utility locates.
- Updated information materials to better explain responsibilities for homeowners and contractors.
