BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton is strengthening its efforts to support cleaner, safer neighbourhoods by amending key by-laws related to waste and dumping. These changes are designed to enhance compliance with waste disposal regulations, creating a cleaner community.
A key change includes the introduction of a 50 per cent penalty increase for repeat violations under Brampton’s
Refuse and Dumping By-law. Violations under this by-law include illegal dumping, graffiti, stagnant water on a property and improper waste disposal. The penalty increase aims to enhance accountability and deter non-compliance. The penalty structure has been changed to the following:
- First offence: $250
- Second offence: $500
- Subsequent offences: $750
In addition, the City is improving the way it enforces maintenance standards for outdoor garbage receptacles by consolidating related by-laws. Only waste, recycling and compost carts provided by the Region of Peel are permitted to be stored outdoors. To ensure these receptacles are maintained in a clean, sanitary and operable condition, enforcement will now fall under the Refuse and Dumping By-law. This change will allow By-law Enforcement Officers to respond more quickly and efficiently.
In 2024, 7,125 service requests related to garbage, dumping and receptacle standards were submitted, accounting for approximately 33 percent of all requests received. Forty-three per cent of the penalty notices issued for these violations were repeat offences.
Imagine Your Impact: No illegal dumping and improper garbage disposal
Litter harms wildlife and clogs waterways. It also takes away from the natural beauty and enjoyment of local neighbourhoods, parks and trails. Simple actions, such as placing garbage in the designated bin, may seem small on their own, but when multiplied across a city of nearly 800,000 people, the collective impact is transformative.
Residents are reminded that:
- Dumping household waste, large furniture or hazardous materials in public spaces, parks, alleyways or vacant lots is strictly prohibited under the City’s Refuse and Dumping By-law.
- All waste must be disposed of through the Region
of Peel’s waste management services or at designated waste disposal locations.
- Excess food and food waste must be properly disposed of in compost bins in accordance with the Region’s waste management program.
- Do not leave food outside for wildlife or pets. Feeding wildlife is prohibited in Brampton.
Proper storage of waste bins
To keep Brampton’s streets clean and accessible residents are encouraged to take the following steps for proper waste bin storage:
- For residents of detached and semi-detached properties:
- Store waste bins in a secure location, such as a garage, side yard or rear yard.
- For residents of townhouses:
- Store waste bins in the garage, side yard or rear yard. If those areas are not accessible, storing in the front yard is permitted.
- Storing waste carts on balconies or porches is not permitted at any property.
- Avoid leaving bins on sidewalks, streets or laneways, as this can create obstacles for pedestrians, drivers and plows.
- Keep the lids of the bin closed, ensuring no items overflow.
- Residents are permitted to place items for collection after 7 pm on the day before scheduled collection.
- Retrieve waste carts promptly after collection to prevent them from being lost or damaged. Report any damage to your bin. The Region of Peel will fix or replace damaged bins for free.
Everyone has a role to play in keeping Brampton clean, healthy and safe. By properly storing waste carts, avoiding illegal dumping and ensuring appropriate disposal of household waste, residents are doing their part by being good neighbours and helping build a stronger, more connected community.
