BRAMPTON, ON (April 30, 2020) – With warmer weather on the way, the City of Brampton wants to remind residents of the importance of physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help contain the spread of COVID-19 in the community, residents are asked to adhere to the following regulations. Individuals not adhering to physical distancing regulation can be fined a minimum of $500 and maximum of up to $100,000 for each offence under the Brampton COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law, or fined under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA).
Spring cleaning and garage sales
At this time of year, residents may want to hold or participate in garage sales to take advantage of spring cleaning. In keeping with the regulations under the EMPCA, garage sales are not permitted due to the health and safety risk they pose to the public. They involve the touching and handling of used goods, and create an unnecessary opportunity for the surface transfer of COVID-19. Garage sales are considered a non-essential business and encourage public gatherings and close physical proximity. If alerted of any garage sales taking place, Enforcement staff will respond to the violation, which may result in a fine.
As of April 20, every household can place up to two extra garbage bags at the curb on their garbage collection day, without garbage tags. Excess garbage must be placed in bags. Containers or cans will not be collected.
Please note that collection staff will only pick up a maximum of two additional bags. Residents who have purchased bag tags are advised to hold on to them until further notice.
Residents are reminded that bulky items that do not fit into a bin or garbage bags will not be picked up:
• at the curb;
• in apartments/condominiums; or
• accepted at Community Recycling Centres (CRCs).
Residents are asked to please dispose of gloves, masks and other home healthcare waste in the garbage, not in recycling
Residents are asked not to drop off any donations at Diabetes Canada bins or other charitable organization drop-off bins that are overflowing throughout Peel, as they will not be collected. Suspended collection also applies at Peel’s CRCs.
If it is absolutely necessary that residents must leave their home to dispose of items immediately, waste can be dropped off at CRCs, where disposal fees have been waived until further notice.
Peel CRCs are currently not accepting electronics, tires, large appliances (such as stoves, fridges and dishwashers) or bulky items.
For the safety of the community and staff, services remain limited at the CRCs and residents should expect longer than normal wait times.
Residents are encouraged to checkpeelregion.ca/waste/community-recycling-centres for the most up-to-date information on operating hours and acceptable items.
Parks and viewing cherry blossoms
Residents are reminded that they are prohibited from using any of the following City property:
- playgrounds and other structures in parks;
- leash-free dog parks;
- picnic shelters;
- outdoor sports facilities and outdoor fitness equipment, including sports fields, basketball and tennis courts;
- recreation centres and surrounding lands; and
- parking lots.

Backyard Garden Program
With physical distancing measures in effect, the City’s Backyard Garden Program encourages residents to grow produce and herbs from the comfort of their own homes, and donate their homegrown crops to local food banks and community organizations.
Residents can request free supplies (soil and seeds) by emailing BramptonGreenCity@brampton.ca. The City also shares tutorials and tips on how to maintain gardens at www.brampton.ca/parks.
New applicants will be added to a waitlist. Businesses that can donate seeds and soil for the community are asked to email bramptongreencity@brampton.ca
Mayor Patrick Brown is hosting an Instagram Live chat (@patrickbrownont) with gardening expert Frank Ferragine “Frankie Flowers” and Backyard Garden Program Chair and City Councillor Doug Whillans, Wards 2 and 6, on May 4 at 3:30 pm. Residents are invited to join the chat to learn more about the Backyard Garden Program, get gardening tips and more.
Recreation At Home
With all City of Brampton Recreation facilities closed until further notice, Brampton Recreation has launched Recreation at Home, a virtual programming hub featuring a variety of video and printable tutorials to keep Bramptonians active, entertained and engaged. Digital resources are available for all age groups and interests, in three areas: Virtual Fitness, Adventures at Home in Arts and Crafts, and the Senior’s Digital Café.
