Fire Prevention Week brings practical fire safety education and community events to Brampton, continuing more than 50 years of local participation
BRAMPTON, ON (October 1, 2026) – Fire safety starts with knowing how to prevent risks before they happen. From October 4 to 10, 2026, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) invites residents to connect with fire personnel during Fire
Prevention Week through a series of activities to learn practical ways to protect themselves, their families and their homes. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” highlights the importance of safely using, charging, storing and disposing of lithium-ion batteries.

Safety tips for lithium-ion batteries
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices residents use every day, from phones and laptops to e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools. When used, charged or stored improperly, these batteries can overheat, ignite and cause fast-moving fires.
Residents can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires by:
- Using the charger and cord that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charging devices on hard, flat and well-ventilated surfaces, away from combustible materials.
- Never charge devices on beds, couches or under pillows.
- Unplugging devices once they are fully charged and avoiding overnight charging.
- Keeping larger battery-powered devices, including e-bikes and e-scooters, away from exits and escape routes while charging.
- Stopping use immediately if a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, produces an unusual odour or begins to smoke.
Make fire safety part of your everyday routine
Fire Prevention Week is also an important reminder that simple actions at home can prevent fires and save lives. Residents are encouraged to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and develop and practice a home escape plan with everyone in their household.
