​Six-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier and Toronto Maple Leafs star Morgan Rielly to captain opposing teams for annual charity game

BRAMPTON, ON (August 12, 2026) – Hockey Hall of Famer and six-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier is the latest hockey legend confirmed for Hockey Night in Brampton, taking on the role of Team Captain alongside previously announced Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly for the August 19 charity game in support of Brampton’s second hospital.

Messier brings one of the most accomplished careers in NHL history to this year’s event. The former Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers captain won six Stanley Cups during his 25-season NHL career and remains the only player in NHL history to captain two different teams to Stanley Cup championships.

Messier joins a star-studded roster featuring Morgan Rielly, Michael Misa, Pavel Mintyukov, Stephen Halliday, Erik Gudbranson, Dylan Strome, Owen Power, Emily Clark, Jaime Bourbonnais, Curtis Joseph, Kris Versteeg, Paul Coffey, Ryan Getzlaf, Joe Kocur, Cody Hodgson, Phil Oreskovic, Ethan Czata, Terry Ryan, Brampton Steelheads goaltenders Neilan Johnson and Oskari Ahmajärvi and CP24’s Steve Ryan. Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark and Gary Roberts will be behind the bench as coaches.​

About Mark Messier

Mark Messier is a Hockey Hall of Famer, six-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the most celebrated leaders in NHL history. Over a 25-season NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks, Messier recorded 1,887 regular-season points and won five Stanley Cups with Edmonton before leading the Rangers to their historic 1994 championship, ending the franchise’s 54-year Stanley Cup drought.

Messier is the only player in NHL history to captain two different teams to Stanley Cup championships, leading the Oilers to the title in 1990 and the Rangers in 1994. A two-time Hart Trophy winner and 1984 Conn Smythe Trophy recipient, Messier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
