Seven AI-enabled units now operational, supporting faster enforcement, improved compliance and safer neighbourhoods
BRAMPTON, ON (June 10, 2026) – The City of Brampton has officially expanded its Automated
Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) program, deploying seven AI-enabled units on by-law enforcement vehicles to support parking enforcement, improve operational efficiency and enhance community safety.

Parking enforcement remains one of the top concerns raised by residents through Service Brampton, with by-law enforcement officers responding to more than 2,300 parking-related service requests each week. As Brampton continues to grow, the City is taking action to address these concerns through increased enforcement resources, proactive patrols and innovative technology.
Originally introduced in 2019 with a single enforcement vehicle, the ALPR program has been expanded through the 2026 Budget with six additional AI-enabled units, bringing the City's total fleet to seven vehicles. The enhanced technology automatically scans licence plates and enables penalty notices to be issued directly to registered licence plate holders by mail, streamlining enforcement processes and allowing officers to focus on other community safety priorities. Designed with privacy in mind, the technology captures only the information necessary to identify potential by-law violations and issue penalty notices, while filtering out irrelevant images and information that are not required for enforcement purposes.
The ALPR expansion is part of the City's broader strategy to strengthen parking enforcement and improve compliance across Brampton. By-law enforcement officers patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week, responding to complaints and prioritizing situations that pose the greatest risk to public safety, such as blocked emergency access routes.

The City is also using 311 service request data to identify neighbourhoods experiencing recurring parking concerns and deploy officers more strategically. This proactive approach helps address violations before they escalate and ensures enforcement resources are focused where they are needed most.
Building on this momentum, the 2026 Budget includes funding for 51 additional by-law enforcement officers, including 12 dedicated to parking and towing enforcement. Together with the expanded ALPR program, these investments are helping the City increase enforcement capacity, improve compliance and maintain safe, accessible streets across Brampton.
Safe and accessible neighbourhoods depend on everyone doing their part. By following parking and street use by-laws, residents can help be good neighbours, create stronger communities and ensure Brampton's streets remain safe and accessible for all. Learn more at brampton.ca/parking.
