January is recognized as Tamil Heritage Month in Canada, offering an opportunity to reflect on the rich history, culture, resiliency and strength of Tamil communities across the country. Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas in the world, and Canadians of Tamil heritage continue to shape the nation’s social, cultural and economic fabric through leadership, entrepreneurship, arts and community building.
January also coincides with Thai Pongal, a traditional harvest festival celebrated annually by the Tamil community. Observed over four days, Thai Pongal marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai and celebrates prosperity, renewal and gratitude for an abundant harvest.
Presented in partnership with the Brampton Tamil Association and the Brampton Tamil Seniors Association, and generously sponsored by Algoma University, the event will include traditional ceremonies, musical and dance performances and complimentary Tamil cuisine.
Residents are invited to join the celebration and experience the traditions, artistry and cultural heritage of the Tamil community.
