STATEMENT FROM MAYOR PATRICK BROWN
As part of our ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our city, the City of Brampton is implementing important budgetary steps including a hiring freeze and right-sizing services to the approved funding levels. These measures are essential to align our operations with current economic realities while continuing to deliver high-quality services to Brampton residents.
Hiring Freeze
Effective immediately, the City of Brampton is instituting a hiring freeze for all new recruits, subject to current collective agreement requirements, currently effective to January 5, 2026. This decision mirrors the provincial government's recent action, as announced on September 27, 2025, to implement a hiring freeze across Ontario's provincial agencies, boards, and commissions. This provincial initiative aims to manage public sector growth and ensure fiscal responsibility.
Right-Sizing Services
The City’s Administration has already made efforts to address 2025 forecasts and issued 2026 budget guidelines to departments with direction to identify reductions in response to known cost pressures, including:
- Settled Labour Agreements
- 2% Inflationary Increase
- 1% Projected Growth in Revenue
- 1% Efficiency Savings Target
In addition to the hiring freeze and the administration efforts, the City is right-sizing services to align more closely with the Council approved levels of funding. Key focus areas will be services that are experiencing declines in revenue and/or escalating cost increases, to ensure sustainable and affordable service delivery.
These adjustments will be strategically applied to ensure minimal disruption to services and impacts to residents. Each department will work closely with the Budget and Finance Division to identify areas where efficiencies can be achieved without compromising service quality.
Commitment to Residents
I want to assure the residents of Brampton that these decisions are made with careful consideration and a commitment to maintaining the high standard of services our community expects. We will continue to monitor our current economic climate and adjust as necessary.
The City of Brampton remains dedicated to responsible governance and ensuring that our resources are utilized effectively to serve the needs of our growing community.
Patrick Brown
Mayor, City of Brampton
