The City of Brampton is dedicated to increasing accessibility throughout the community, and as part of this, Brampton homeowners are encouraged to place a Treat Accessibly sign on their front lawn to let residents know that if a trick-or-treater has a disability, they can experience Halloween without barriers at their home.

Tips for an accessible Halloween
  • Make sure the path to a trick-or-treating area is well lit.
  • Clear driveways and pathways
  • Move cars out of the driveway to allow better accessibility for trick-or-treaters.
  • Create a trick-or-treat station at the end of a driveway, out of a garage or a vehicle’s trunk
  • Refrain from using strobe lights or high-pitched, sudden loud noises.
  • Keep pets safe and secure.

For more information on Treat Accessibly, and to get a lawn sign visit www.treataccessibly.com.

Halloween is fun for the whole family, including pets! Ensure that all pets stay safe while celebrating Halloween and remember that pets can become stressed with the unusual sights and sounds.

Halloween Pet Safety Tips
  • Keep pets indoors in a safe area. Provide a quiet room away from the front door for your pet and have someone stay with them.
  • Keep treats out of reach. Many candies, such as chocolate, gum, and sugar-free candies containing xylitol, are toxic to animals. If you suspect your pet ingested something toxic, call your veterinary clinic immediately.
  • Only dress up your pet if they are comfortable. If you decide to dress your pet in a costume, always prioritize their safety and comfort. Choose comfortable costumes and always supervise them. Some costumes can restrict movement, be a source of stress and discomfort, cause trouble breathing, and be choking hazards.
  • Keep decorations out of reach including candles (fires and burns), lights (chewing into cords can cause serious issues), garlands, fake cobwebs, rubber eyeballs (choking hazard), etc.
  • Ensure IDs are updated (such as collars, tags and microchip contact info.)
  • Minimize noise. Consider handing out treats on your porch or driveway to avoid people ringing the doorbell or knocking.
