BRAMPTON, ON (October 5, 2023) – From October 7 to 14, the City of Brampton and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention WeekTM to recognize Fire Prevention Week to help educate the community on fire safety and preparedness.
This year’s theme is Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention. The campaign, sponsored by Enbridge Gas, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe.
Tips to stay safe in the kitchen
- Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
- Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
Call 9-1-1 immediately in case of a fire! Get out, stay out!
To celebrate Fire Prevention Week, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services will be holding open houses at fire stations and hosting fire safety displays across the city.

“Fire safety is such an important topic and ensuring residents are safe in their homes is critical. During Fire Prevention Week I encourage all residents to make sure their homes are as fire safe as possible. Ensuring everyone in the home knows the rules in the kitchen can save lives. I look forward to seeing residents out at the events happening in the community and thank Brampton Fire and Emergency Services for the incredible work they do to keep our community safe.”
- Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5; Chair, Community Services, City of Brampton
“Fire Prevention Week is a great time for people to ensure their homes are fire safe and that they have an escape plan in the event of a fire. Kitchen fires are the leading cause of fires in homes and can happen so quickly. By implementing a few rules in the kitchen when cooking, residents can help to keep themselves and loved ones safe.”
