BRAMPTON, ON (July 9, 2021) – Working with all levels of government, the City of Brampton is dedicated to advocating for growth and sustainability initiatives that will benefit its residents and drive change locally. With a focus on opportunities in health care, postsecondary education, transit and economic recovery, the City has secured substantial grants and contributions from the federal and provincial governments, pursuing additional sources of revenue to secure a stronger future for Brampton.
Federal and Provincial grant funding and contributions
Since 2019, grant funding announcements and contributions from the federal and provincial governments totalling $667,195,952 have been announced for the City, an increase of 232 per cent over the previous Term of Councils since 2011. Of this, approximately 137.8 million in funding is for COVID-19 Restart and Recovery in response to the pandemic. Since 2019, the amount of grant funding for the City unrelated to COVID-19 applications totals $529,314,465.
Working with the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the City has successfully advocated and secured grants and contributions for the following notable projects since 2019:
- Riverwalk – in November 2020, it was announced that the City will receivemore than $38 million towards flood mitigation in downtown Brampton, moving the City one step closer to realizing its Riverwalk project. The City’s application Downtown Brampton Flood Protection Project was approved by the Government of Canada following the successful review of the project under the terms and conditions of the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
- Phase II of Peel Memorial – in March 2021, the provincial government announced as part of their budget that they would fund the expansion of William Osler Health System’s Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness into a new hospital and provide financial support for the development of a new institute of medical education in Brampton in partnership with Ryerson University.
- Postsecondary – In March 2021, the City welcomed the Province’s announcement expansion of more postsecondary opportunities in Brampton, including a medical institute at Ryerson University. At its July 7 meeting, Council voted in favour of a $1 million planning grant to help fund a future Brampton School of Medicine. On June 16, 2021, the City and the University of Guelph-Humber confirmed the intention for the academic institution to move to Brampton as an anchor tenant in the Centre for Innovation.
- Third Brampton Transit Facility – in April, 2021, Brampton secured federal and provincial investment of $128M towards a third Brampton Transit facility. The construction of this new facility will improve the capacity, quality, and safety of public transit infrastructure for Brampton, and allow for the future installation of infrastructure to service electric buses, creating cleaner and more efficient transportation methods for residents
- Milestone electric bus pilot project – In July 2019, the City welcomed asignificant investment by the Government of Canada in the milestone Pan-Canadian Electric Bus Demonstration and Integration Trial in Brampton. The City secured $11.15 million in funding towards Phase 1 of the pilot project was secured to test battery electric buses in Brampton.
Sponsorship
In March 2019, Brampton City Council approved a short list of City facilities for the sale of naming rights as part of adopting a citywide sponsorship strategy and an updated Sponsorship and Naming Rights Policy. The citywide sponsorship and naming rights program offers customized opportunities for businesses to connect with the community, creating enhanced experiences for residents.
With increased fiscal pressures, the City is committed to minimizing the impact on Brampton taxpayers, while providing the highest quality of life for residents. In September 2020, Brampton City Council approved a 15-year agreement between the City of Brampton and Save Max Real Estate Inc. for exterior naming rights to the Brampton Soccer Centre for $2,512,500.
Since adopting the citywide sponsorship strategy and an updated Sponsorship and Naming Rights Policy, the City has finalized sponsorship and naming rights agreements totaling $3.7 million in revenue to offset some of the increased costs associated with providing greater service to residents.
