City’s Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program goes virtual for 2020

BRAMPTON, ON (July 27, 2020) – The City of Brampton’s Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program will return on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. This year, to protect the health and safety of staff and residents, the program is moving online.

The Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program aims to improve civic engagement, empower residents to play an active role in enhancing their neighbourhood and connect them with resources. There will be three new ways for residents to learn more about their neighbourhood and share what is important to them online:

  • Virtual walks – 15 pre-recorded walks will be posted on the City’s website on scheduled dates. Residents are encouraged to take these walks virtually, or use the provided tools to take these walks independently in person, while maintaining physical distance.
  • Neighbourhood survey – the City wants to understand the community’s neighbourhoods and how residents interact within them. Residents are encouraged to take the online survey for their area.
  • Online mapping tool – an online mapping tool will allow residents to identify opportunities, concerns and changes within their neighbourhood.

Quick facts

  • A Complete Neighbourhood Audit was identified as an action in the Brampton 2040 Vision. Nurturing Neighbourhoods launched in 2019 to take community feedback, connect residents to resources and, in the long term, create an action plan tailored specifically to local neighbourhoods.
  • The City completed 11 Nurturing Neighbourhood walks in 2019, attended by more than 400 residents.

Quotes
“Brampton is a Mosaic, and our residents are experts when it comes to the neighbourhoods they call home. The Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program provides innovative opportunities for Bramptonians to be engaged in their community, and I encourage anyone living in the 15 areas selected this year to have their say by taking the virtual walks, participating in the neighbourhood surveys and commenting on the online mapping tool.”
Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton

“As the City continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and reopen amenities where possible, community safety remains of the utmost importance. This year’s Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program will provide a safe way for residents to express their opinions on 15 local neighbourhoods, and help the City continue to build sustainable communities.”
- Martin Medeiros, Regional Councillor, Wards 3 & 4; Chair, Planning and Development Committee, City of Brampton

“The Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program allows residents to share what they love about their community, learn about upcoming projects and communicate ideas about what they might like to see change locally. While the program looks a little different this year, residents can still enhance their neighbourhood by getting involved, all from the safety of their homes.”
- Pat Fortini, Regional Councillor, Wards 7 & 8; Vice-Chair, Planning and Development Committee, City of Brampton

“The City remains committed to serving the residents of Brampton during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we move the Nurturing Neighbourhoods Program online, we look forward to continuing to engage with residents and their ideas while keeping our community safe.”
- David Barrick, Chief Administrative Officer, City of Brampton
