Brampton exploring additional options for postsecondary education

BRAMPTON, ON (September 25, 2019) – In line with the Term of Council Priorities, the City of Brampton is continuing to pursue options for the establishment of a university in Brampton. Today, Brampton City Council unanimously took another step in seeking solutions to increased postsecondary education offerings in Brampton.

City staff will explore options for establishing a Brampton University, including the following:
• Public-private partnerships to develop, build and maintain buildings that would house a Brampton University and potential student housing
• Advocacy efforts at the Provincial and Federal levels of government to obtain support for a Brampton University
• Establish a business case and programming possibilities that reflect the demands of current and future employers

The City remains committed to building long-term relationships with existing postsecondary partners, including Ryerson University, Algoma University and Sheridan College. These are all recognized and well-respected institutions that are continually investing and growing in Brampton, bringing new program options for residents. Progress on these relationships have led to key successes, including:
• Establishment of Chang School for Continuing Education courses in City Hall’s West Tower
• Announcement of the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst – to operate out of City Hall
• Continued expansion of Algoma University’s physical footprint and program offering in downtown Brampton
• Working towards an agreement with Ryerson University for collaboration in the City’s co-working/incubator space downtown
