BRAMPTON, ON – Today, the City of Brampton and Ryerson University are announcing a milestone in a significant education project that will transform the city.

Ryerson University's G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education will officially begin offering courses in downtown Brampton in January 2019.

“This is a major step forward in the City of Brampton’s partnership with Ryerson,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “I am very excited to welcome The Chang School, and with it, substantial opportunities for learning and innovation. Together, the City of Brampton and Ryerson will change the face of education in our city.”

The first courses, in Cybersecurity via the certificate in Computer Security and Digital Forensics, begin January 14, 2019 and will run on Monday and Thursday evenings in the West Tower on George Street in downtown Brampton. Officials from the school will be available on Saturday, November 17 in the City Hall Atrium to answer questions and provide more information on the program.

Those courses are Computer Network Security (CKDF 110) and Security Architecture and Design (CKDF 140).

“Cybersecurity is top of mind for many businesses in Brampton and across the globe,” said Councillor Jeff Bowman, Economic Development Chair. “The Chang School programming, and future plans for the downtown, present great opportunities for our highly diverse and talented residents to build professional skills for in-demand jobs.”

The Chang School is committed to education and lifelong learning, providing relevant, quality educational programming geared toward adult learners.

"It is our privilege to create specialized learning opportunities for Brampton's young and diverse talent pool to help narrow the skills and knowledge gap that currently exists in this emerging industry."

Since the Province announced its plans regarding funding for university projects in Markham, Milton and Brampton, the City has continued to work closely with Ryerson University and Sheridan College on a number of initiatives and options to establish their presence in downtown Brampton. City funding for the planned downtown innovation hub, library and specialized cybersecurity institute remains, while the planning process for those elements of the overall project continues in partnership with both Ryerson and Sheridan College.

The Chang School of Continuing Education operating in Brampton is an important milestone step in the process. Brampton is also moving forward on activity to open a new business incubator in downtown Brampton in 2019. Ryerson University expressed their support of this initiative, and their intention to add their leading expertise in entrepreneur development and innovation to the mix. Ryerson’s DMZ was recently recognized as the world’s number one university-based incubator.
