#FollowFriday - Brampton Fire reaches 10,000 Twitter followers

BRAMPTON, ON - Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) has scaled rare heights in the Twitterverse, reaching 10,000 followers in recent days.
"We want to reach as many residents as possible with important and potentially life-saving information.” said Regional Councillor Michael Palleschi, Chair of Community Services. "We're proud of reaching this social networking milestone; it is terrific encouragement for us to renew our efforts to connect with residents through different media."
@BramptonFireES is fourth among Canadian fire departments in Twitter followers, behind Toronto (17.3K), Halifax (15.1K) and Ottawa (10.9 k)
The Twitter account @BramptonFireES was started by Fire and Life Safety personnel in 2010. In 2016, Brampton Fire added a new dimension to their Twitter outreach, putting access in the hands of officers responding to emergency calls. Over the course of a week, @BramptonFireES followers can expect to see fire safety messaging, pictures and information from emergency response scenes, videos of fire fighter training and more.
"Live tweeting from scenes has helped us reinforce safety messaging," said Fire Chief Michael Clark. "And it's helped us connect more regularly with local and regional media, helping keep them informed, and through them, keeping our residents informed."
Brampton Fire is also active on Facebook and YouTube. Several videos posted to the YouTube channel have received international attention, and are being used in classrooms and municipalities around the world. BFES' Fire Safety Education Video has had more than 550,000 views.
