City responds to Province’s announcement on Region of Peel dissolution

BRAMPTON, ON (December 13, 2023) – The Province of Ontario has announced they will not be moving forward with dissolving the Region of Peel by January 1, 2025, to make Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon three single-tier cities.

On May 18, 2023, the provincial government introduced Bill 112, to dissolve the Region. Since that announcement, the City of Brampton continued to have productive discussions with the provincial government, the provincially appointed Transition Board, and regional partners.

The most pressing concerns for Brampton on dissolution were regional servicing to support growth, emergency services like paramedics and policing, local shelters and long-term care and that no financial costs or added tax burden were placed on residents over the plan to move forward as single-tiered municipalities.

The City remains committed to continuing to work closely with all parties on a path forward that is in the best interest of taxpayers in Brampton and across the Region of Peel.

Quote

"The Ford government has stopped a potential financial train wreck and diminished emergency services from happening across the board. It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing. This is great news for taxpayers in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. This is also welcomed news for regional staff, Peel Police, Peel Paramedics, Peel Public Health, Peel Housing and Long-Term Care employees. We have averted a disaster!”
- Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton
