Statement by Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown on the passing of Hazel McCallion

The City of Brampton joins the country in grieving the loss of Hazel McCallion, former mayor of Mississauga and one of Canada’s longest-serving mayors, who passed away this morning at the age of 101.

While Hazel McCallion served as the Mayor of Mississauga for 12 consecutive terms from 1978-2014, it could be said that she was Canada’s Mayor.

Aptly nicknamed “Hurricane Hazel”, she was known for her confident political style and leadership, which saw the transformation of Mississauga from an amalgamation of small towns and farmlands into a developed urban centre that is the 6th largest city in Canada.

She was the epitome of hard work and wisdom. She was a trailblazer for women in politics and in the workforce and began her political career as Chair of Streetsville’s planning board and President of the local Chamber of Commerce.

At the age of 101, Mayor Hazel continued to devote countless hours serving as Chancellor of Sheridan College, the Chief Elder Officer at Revera, a Board Member at the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Chair of the Greenbelt Council, an Advisor at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, an ambassador for women’s hockey and a champion for so many other organizations and causes.

She lived an incredibly full life and has left a wonderful legacy.

To honour her memory and dedication to the Peel Region, City flags will be at half-mast and a book of condolences will be available at Brampton City Hall and online at www.brampton.ca/BramptonRemembers

We share our thoughts and prayers with her children, Peter, Linda and Paul during this time of sorrow and reflection. May she Rest in Peace and her memories be a blessing.
