BRAMPTON, ON (November 18, 2022) – To bring residents together to cheer on Team Canada, 2022 FIFA World Cup matches will be broadcast live at Garden Square in Downtown Brampton. The tournament kicks off on Sunday, November 20, and runs through to the final on Sunday, December 18 in Qatar.

This tournament marks the return of the Canadian Men’s National Team to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1986. Canada finished atop the table in Concacaf qualifying to earn a place in the tournament. Canada’s roster features a number of players that were either born or grew up in Brampton, including: Captain Atiba Hutchinson, Tajon Buchanan, Iké Ugbo, Junior Hoilett, Cyle Larin, Liam Miller and Jonathan Osorio.

Canada has been placed in Group F and will play in three group stage matches against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco. The top two teams in each group following group play will advance to the knockout round of the tournament.

Canada’s Schedule:
Wednesday, November 23 v. Belgium – 2:00 pm ET
Sunday, November 27 v. Croatia – 11:00 am ET
Thursday, December 1 v. Morocco – 10:00 am ET

On Sunday, November 27, Canada will play Croatia and the City will host an exciting celebration in Garden Square with a number of local organizations including Brampton Soccer Club and Brams United Soccer Club. There will be a soccer net set-up for kids to play and local food vendors where fans can grab a bite to eat.

Garden Square will be transformed during every Canada match and life-size cut-outs of Brampton players will be in the Square, providing fans the opportunity to snap a photo with their favourite player. Canadian flags, muskoka chairs and picnic tables will be setup for all matches. Fans are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to ensure there is sufficient seating.

Brampton’s first boxed soccer court, inspired by and named in honour of Atiba Hutchinson, is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2023. The new boxed soccer court will be an addition to the Century Gardens Youth Hub and will contribute to the accessible and modern facility that will serve the community and enhance youth development.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup features seven previous champions including the defending champions, France (1998, 2018), five-time winners Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), four-time winners Germany (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), two-time winners Argentina (1978, 1986), Uruguay (1930, 1950), and one-time winners England (1966) and Spain (2010).
