​​​​The City of Brampton is inviting members of the media to attend a ceremonial street naming honouring retired Sergeant Lonsdale “Lonny” Blackett, a Brampton resident, trailblazer and dedicated public servant for 33 years who made history in 1974 as the first Black officer recruited by Peel Regional Police following regionalization. 

Sergeant Blackett began his policing career at Brampton’s 21 Division and went on to help establish the Peel Regional Police Airport Division. He also played an important role in advancing more diverse recruitment practices in policing, helping open doors for future generations of officers. 

The event will include remarks from Mayor Patrick Brown and Councillor Dennis Keenan, Deputy Chief Marc Andrews, Peel Regional Police and Sergeant Lonsdale Blackett.
