BRAMPTON, ON – As spring construction season begins, the City of Brampton is helping residents, contractors and landlords start projects with confidence by providing direct access to City experts during Building Safety Month.

Whether planning a home renovation, building a deck, creating a rental unit, managing a property or preparing for construction work, the City is encouraging people to get the right information early on permits, zoning requirements, inspections and rental housing rules.

Meet the experts

To support residents and the building community, the City is hosting in-person sessions at Brampton City Hall:

Dates: May 13 and May 14, 2026

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Brampton City Hall Atrium, 2 Wellington Street West

City staff can help provide information about:

  • Zoning and project requirements
  • Common issues that can delay approvals

No appointment is required.

Why building safety matters

Safe construction protects homeowners, tenants, workers, neighbours and future occupants.

The Ontario Building Code sets minimum standards for construction. In Brampton, Building Officials review plans and inspect projects at key stages to help ensure work is safe and compliant.

Permits: Start early to avoid delays

Getting the right information before construction begins can save time, reduce costly corrections and help projects move forward.

A building permit confirms a project meets Building Code and zoning requirements, while inspections provide added assurance during construction.

Starting work without required approvals can create safety risks, delays, rework costs or enforcement action.

Building in a growing city

As one of Canada’s fastest growing big municipalities, Brampton continues to evolve its planning framework to support safe, sustainable growth.

Recent updates to the City’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law introduce clearer, modern rules to guide development. This includes revised driveway width requirements designed to improve safety, functionality and neighbourhood compatibility.

Supporting safe rental housing

Building safety also plays an important role in rental housing. The City of Brampton’s Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Program establishes clear standards for rental housing. Homeowners renting one to four units need an annual licence. There is no charge for a licence, and renewals are also free.

Through the program, rental units must comply with zoning and building regulations, including registering all Additional Rental Units (ARUs) with the Building Division. These requirements help ensure rental units meet minimum safety standards, while supporting responsible landlords and contributing to well-maintained neighbourhoods.

A shared responsibility

Building Safety Month highlights the importance of safe construction and responsible property maintenance across the city.

Safe building benefits everyone, from homeowners and tenants to neighbours and future generations. By understanding requirements, securing permits and working with City staff, residents can protect their investment and support healthier neighbourhoods and a stronger Brampton.
