BRAMPTON, ON – Emergencies can happen without warning and disrupt daily life in moments. Whether it’s a severe storm, power outage, flooding event or extreme temperatures, being prepared can make all the difference.

From May 3 to 9, the City of Brampton is recognizing Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week, a national awareness initiative connecting all levels of government, first responders and community partners to promote readiness and resilience.

Led locally by the Brampton Emergency Management Office (BEMO), EP Week highlights a simple message: preparedness begins with awareness. Understanding potential risks is the first step toward building a plan that protects households and strengthens neighbourhoods during unexpected situations.

Building your emergency preparedness

Preparedness doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple, proactive actions can make a meaningful difference when it matters most.

Make a plan

Start by talking with your family about what to do during an emergency. Consider how you will stay in contact, where you will meet and how you will respond if you are separated. Practicing your plan helps everyone act with confidence during high-stress situations.

Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit

Having essential supplies on hand can help you remain self-sufficient during the critical first hours of an emergency. A basic kit should include water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, important documents and other necessities to support your household’s immediate needs.

Supporting business resilience

Emergency preparedness extends beyond individual households. Businesses, workplaces and community organizations play a critical role in reducing disruption and supporting recovery.

Business Continuity and Resilience Awareness Week, taking place May 18 to 22, 2026, highlights the importance of planning ahead under the theme “Think You’re Resilient? Well, Think Again!

Disruptions such as extreme weather, power outages, fires or technology failures can impact operations with little warning. A business continuity plan helps limit disruption and enables faster recovery.

While no plan can cover every scenario, simple preparation can make a meaningful difference. Resilience is built over time, helping businesses adapt and continue operating when it matters most.

A shared responsibility

Preparedness is a shared effort. Looking out for neighbours, supporting vulnerable residents and staying connected as a community helps protect everyone during a crisis.

EP Week serves as a reminder to take action—not just for one week, but throughout the year. By building simple preparedness habits today, residents can help create a stronger, safer and more resilient Brampton for the future.
