Innovating Healthy and Sustainable Living
At the core of this transformation is an increased focus on the concept of place and the quality of the public realm. This is what Brampton will be demonstrating on this two km stretch of Queen Street just east of its historic downtown currently undergoing transformation into a new urban district made up of inclusive, sustainable ‘20-minute neighbourhoods’ anchored by ‘community hubs’ where many of the things we need in our daily lives become available to the full range of the population all within easy walking distance.
It begins with attractive design concepts that create streets, parks and trails, and community facilities, shops and restaurants, office and hotels, arts and culture, health and services. Add micro-mobility hubs, new forms of housing, smart-cities infrastructure and net-zero carbon-neutral goals and this new development will establish Queen Street East as a vibrant neighbourhood of over 60,000 residents.
The Queen Street East Precinct Plan develops the framework for bringing these concepts to life in this 220 acre area along the two kilometre stretch of Queen Street East, Centre Street to Highway 410. This framework will be cohesive and show developers and the community what can be expected.
The Brampton 2040 Vision and the 2018-2022 Term of Council Priorities set the ground work for the Precinct Plan. Queen Street East contributes to the Vision’s plan for Brampton to evolve into a connected, inclusive and innovative city of 1,000,000 by 2040.
It is key for this Vision that Queen Street East implement design and integrated mixed use density to become a neighbourhood where walking, cycling and transit use is prioritized. The Term of Council Priorities echoes this direction and further proposes investments in transit, bike lanes and green connections to further enable residents to live, work, and play on Queen Street East.
