​​​​With a population of 593,638 in 2016, Brampton is the ninth largest city in Canada and the third largest in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Brampton also had the second highest growth rate among Canada’s 25 largest cities between 2011 and 2016, and is expected to grow to have 890,000 people and 322,000 jobs in 2041.

As Brampton continues to grow, so does its transportation needs. Extending the planned Hurontario LRT from the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Avenue to the Brampton GO station is a key transit priority and city-building project for the City of Brampton.

Much more than a way to get from A to B, this LRT project will play an important role in the long-term rapid transit network in Brampton, and is essential for supporting the sustainable growth and evolution of the Downtown Core and Central Area.

Brampton City Council has approved staff recommendations to update the Hurontario-Main LRT (HMLRT) environmental assessment study to include three options – the HMLRT TPAP approved route, a Main-George one-way loop and a tunnel – to extend light rail transit fr​om Brampton Gateway Terminal to Brampton GO station in Downtown Brampton. The three options will also look to incorporate elements of the enhanced streetscaping for Downtown Reimagined where feasible. These options will be evaluated for their potential to best address Brampton’s current and future needs. This process is now underway.
