Brampton Grows Off

Brampton Grows Off-Grid shed is a self-sustaining, regenerative food system able to produce food for many families in Brampton.

This innovative technology contains its own ecosystem, using a combination of soil-based growing, hydroponics, and aquaponics systems to grow edible organic fruits and vegetables, and even edible fish. The shed is zero-waste and carbon negative, powered by solar and wind renewable energy, and it is built to withstand harsh winters.

The sustainable indoor farm provides an interactive educational experience for attendees of all ages to explore various features the shed has to offer.

On May 5, 2021, City Council approved an Off-Grid Organic Food Shed.

Brampton Grows Off-Grid shed was provided by Nature Harmony. Produce from the food shed will be donated to Regeneration Outreach Community to help feed families in Brampton, as part of the 2021 Backyard Garden Program and aligns with the Brampton Grow Green Environmental Master Plan, which cited urban agriculture as an opportunity for the City.

The unique infrastructure is located at and supported by Brampton Fire Station 212, at 8220 Mississauga Road, for a six-month pilot beginning this spring.

FAQs

How much does the food shed cost?: The food shed will be purchased from Nature Harmony at the cost of $50,000, which includes pricing for the shed, all components within it to grow produce, aquarium solar panels, and batteries. After the six-month pilot, the City will maintain full ownership of the shed.
Why is the shed being purchased from Nature Harmony? How was the vendor selected?: Nature Harmony is a non-profit organization focused on promoting, facilitating and empowering effective stewardship of the earth. Based on the City’s current needs, this organization offers the innovative features required to grow large amounts of produce, in one cohesive solution.
How does the shed function?: The 161 square foot shed will be powered by renewable energy (solar), and made of highly energy-efficient building material. Inside, the shed’s automated LED lighting and grow beds provide year-round organic food production. Rainwater is harvested from the roof and directed into a large collection barrel. Each system draws water from the barrel and uses it to feed the plants. The combination of renewable energy, energy efficient envelope, and smart grow systems allow it to run all year long. Approximately 64 square feet of grow beds will produces nearly 150 lbs of produce in six month, which will be donated to Regeneration Outreach Community to feed families in Brampton, as part of the 2021 Backyard Garden Program.
Does the City plan to purchase more food sheds?: The City is currently piloting the food shed for six months. After the six-month period, the City maintains full ownership of the shed, and staff will continue to grow produce on their own. Parks staff will reassess the pilot and determine if another shed may be purchased or existing one needs to be moved to a new location within the city.
Which organizations will the produce and fish be donated to?: Similar to the Backyard Garden Program, food from this shed will be donated to local food banks and organizations. During the six-month pilot program, food will be donated to Regeneration Outreach Community to feed families in Brampton.
