National recognition for Brampton’s focus on connecting people, data and technology

BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton understands that improving accessibility to open data is key to assess, shape, and evaluate its services and programs.

On November 8, the Canadian Open Data Summit recognized Brampton’s GeoHub as a national leader, as the 2018 winner of the Open Data Accessibility Award.

Collecting and sharing data makes connecting with the community easier. The City views data as an important driver of innovation – understanding patterns and trends gives evidence to enable Smart City technologies that enhance everyday quality of life for Brampton residents.

“Worldwide, we are seeing exponential growth in technological innovations in urban centres,” says Katharine Kulson, Chief Information Officer. “Making data accessible to residents, business owners, investors, students and others creates unique collaboration avenues for economic and social support, public health and community safety as part of our 2040 Vision. This is what being a Smart City is all about: using technology to enhance quality of life.”

Brampton’s 2040 Vision is guided by five lenses – one of which is “Technology”. A Smart City strategy is the framework that will support this perspective, enabling the City to take command of how technology shapes Brampton. By challenging traditional city building, the 2040 Vision and Smart City strategy create a shared responsibility between the private and public sector.
