Are you prepared for an emergency?

Emergencies can happen without warning. Whether it’s extreme heat and cold or severe winter and summer storms, it is important to prepare and protect yourself, your family and our community in the event of an emergency.

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 5 to 11 and a reminder to take the time to make sure you’re prepared should an emergency happen.

To help you get prepared, the City of Brampton’s Emergency Management Office is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Event on Saturday, May 4 at Bramalea City Centre, generously sponsored by Enbridge.

How can you be prepared?

Make a plan

It is important to ensure that your entire family is prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster. You may not always be together when these events take place, so it is important you have plans for making sure you are able to contact one another.

  • Prepare a home escape plan:
    • Draw a floor plan of your home and identify all rooms on each floor
    • Plan at least two escape routes from each room where possible (doors, windows and stairways)
    • Have a predetermined meeting place outside of your neighbourhood where your family will reconnect if you are separated
    • The location of your emergency kit(s)
    • Go over the plan with everyone in your home and practice at least once a year so every member of your family knows what to do.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Emergency kits prepare you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Kits should include:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Extra set of car and house keys
  • Small amount of cash
  • Sleeping bag or warm blankets
  • Toiletries
  • First aid kit
  • Medicines
  • Supplies for pets
