Description
The City is undertaking a ditch restoration project between Heath Pond (T38) and Simpson Pond (T37), located near Sandalwood Parkway West and Hurontario Street. The approximately 1-kilometer ditch restoration projects aim to improve stormwater flow, increase drainage capacity, and support healthier downstream water quality.
To complete this work, the City has engaged Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to implement the dredging and restoration work within the stormwater ditch.
Project Background
Heath Pond, constructed in 2004, services a contributing drainage area of approximately 16.31 hectares, while Simpson Pond collects runoff from an area of approximately 107 hectares. Both facilities manage stormwater from nearby industrial and residential areas. Over time, the connecting ditch between Heath Pond and Simpson Pond, that was meant to convey stormwater runoff, has experienced a significant decline in capacity and flow due to sediment buildup, overgrown vegetation and invasive phragmites.
Project Overview
This restoration project will include:
- Excavation and removal of accumulated sediment
- Removal of invasive species, including Phragmites and other obstructive vegetation
- Regrade and reshape the channel to restore natural flow patterns and enhance drainage
Project Timeline
The project is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2026.
