Overview
Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and the City of Brampton are partnering to restore approximately 500 metres of degraded, channelized Spring Creek located within Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park, Hilldale Park North, and Hilldale Park South.
This multi-year project will improve the health of the creek, reduce erosion and flooding risks to nearby infrastructure, and transform a hard-engineered watercourse into a resilient, natural system that provides habitat for wildlife and supports a healthier community.
Why Restoration is Needed
Between the 1960s and 1970s, this section of Spring Creek was lined with concrete, gabion baskets, and cable-crete to manage stormwater in a rapidly urbanizing area.
Over time, these structures have deteriorated and no longer function as intended.
Key Issues Identified
- Failing concrete and gabion structures are causing erosion, unstable banks, and poor water quality.
- The straightened channel and direct stormwater outfalls limit the creek's ability to slow water, filter pollutants, and function naturally.
- The absence of wetlands and naturalized areas, along with extensive turf grass, results in low habitat value, low biodiversity, and low climate resilience.
Project Benefits
- Reduces flooding and improves stormwater management.
- Stabilizes eroding banks and protects infrastructure.
- Restores natural creek habitat for fish, birds, and wildlife.
- Improves water quality through natural filtration.
- Increases biodiversity and strengthens climate resilience.
