​BRAMPTON, ON (Nov 4, 2019) – The City of Brampton is expanding and making changes to its marriage service offerings beginning December 1, 2019.

Marriage licences

Starting December 1, 2019, identification requirements to apply for a marriage licence are changing:

1. The Canadian Citizenship Card and Landed Immigrant Document will be accepted as primary identification in addition to other existing primary documents.

2. French Canadian-issued government ID and divorce certificates will be accepted without English translation. No other French-only documents will be accepted without full translation.

3. In accordance with the Office of the Registrar General and consistent with municipal processes across the province, provincial health cards and SIN cards will not be accepted as identification to apply for a marriage licence.

To date in 2019, the City has issued 2,852 marriage licences, and during its peak months of May to August, issued 15 marriage licences daily. These changes will serve to align the City’s marriage service offerings with surrounding municipalities and make the process even more accessible to our applicants. These changes also meet provincial requirements set out by the Office of the Registrar General.

Simple Civil Wedding Ceremony: new – Tuesday ceremonies!

Starting January 2020, couples who are looking for a simple, non-religious way to exchange their marriage vows can book a Simple Civil Ceremony on Tuesday or Thursday at Brampton City Hall, 2 Wellington Street West. Pre-booking is still required for a Simple Civil Ceremony, which accommodates up to six people (including two witnesses).
