BRAMPTON, ON (May 20, 2025) – Big changes are coming to the heart of downtown Brampton. The City of Brampton has announced that demolition of City-owned properties at 30 to 60 Main Street North will begin the first week of June, marking a major milestone in its plan to create more vibrant and accessible public spaces.
After the demolition, the City will temporarily expand Garden Square to create more usable space for the community and events while long-term plans for the Heritage Theatre and Southern Blocks move forward. Improvements will include upgraded surfaces, new seating, landscaping and lighting to make downtown more inviting.

- Phase 2: Detailed Design & Approvals for Expansion of Garden Square – Q2 2025 to Q3 2025
- Phase 3: Construction of Expansion of Garden Square – Q3 2025

Downtown Brampton Revitalization
Downtown Brampton is undergoing a major transformation, supported by a dedicated investment of $23.8 million through the
2025 Budget, supporting the revitalization of Main and Queen Streets, including improvements to roads, sidewalks, lighting, street furniture and landscaping, and the reconstruction of Ken Whillans Square.

Downtown Streetscape for Main and Queen Streets
The demolition on Main Street builds on the City’s Downtown Streetscape project construction, a key element of the Council-approved Integrated Downtown Plan (IDP). Streetscaping initiatives focus on:
- Enhancing the urban environment
- Creating active linkages
- Improving pedestrian experiences
By upgrading roads, sidewalks, lighting, street furniture and landscaping, the project aims to create a more connected, welcoming and accessible downtown. These improvements are designed to support business growth, foster a vibrant street life and improve quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

To keep residents and businesses informed, the City has launched a new interactive construction map. This digital tool provides real-time updates on downtown projects, including:

Redevelopment of Ken Whillans and Garden Squares Open House

Jane’s Walk
Before the Open House at 5 pm, the City will host a Jane’s Walk, a guided tour and annual event inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs, where we will explore and discuss the opportunity to redevelop Ken Whillans and Garden Squares. This year’s Jane’s Walk, themed Public Spaces for a Vibrant Downtown, invites participants to reflect on the past, present and future of these two key civic spaces. Discover how thoughtful design can create more inclusive, flexible, accessible, and connected public places for everyday life, celebrations and major events.
